The research objective is the single most important input in an Auto-FGD study. The platform reads your objective and automatically builds a full discussion guide around it — so the objective must clearly define what to explore and what decision it will inform.
What a Research Objective Is (and Isn't)
A research objective is: a clear statement that defines what actionable insight the study must generate.
A research objective is NOT:
A topic or background briefing
A business goal or KPI
A hypothesis or expected answer
A list of questionnaire or discussion guide questions
Why Objective Quality Matters
When your objective is well-written:
Findings map directly to the creative or business decision being made
Studies don't need to be repeated
When your objective is unclear:
Results become broad and fail to support a clear decision (insight dilution)
The AI agents evaluate against the wrong brief, and the output reflects that
Clarity at the start leads to stronger outcomes at the end.
Structure of an Effective Objective
An effective objective has three components:
1. A specific anchor — the exact context or journey stage being studied (e.g., during onboarding, after first interaction, when choosing between offers, at sign-up or checkout)
2. A specific action verb — what you want the AI agents to do Use: evaluate, identify, compare, diagnose, map, uncover drivers/barriers Avoid: broad terms like explore or learn about
3. A clear business KPI — why this learning matters (e.g., a product decision, a messaging refinement, a UX redesign, a positioning pivot, a retention strategy)
Example: "To understand how consumers evaluate the onboarding experience of a new loyalty program and identify friction points impacting early retention."
Auto-FGD Objective Template
Evaluate [creative/stimulus] on [channel/placement]. For each, identify what resonates, what falls flat, and how [users/shoppers] process it. To inform [decision].
Always include: channel or placement, the creative being tested, what you want to learn, the decision it informs.
Always exclude: business background, audience labels (the community handles this), pre-baked hypotheses, verbatim discussion questions, win-confirmation framing.
Common Objective Mistakes — Annotated Examples
Case 1: Overloaded Objective
The actual research question is buried inside a long block of business context, background, hypotheses, and verbatim questions. Asking to "pick a winner" steers the discussion toward a verdict rather than genuine understanding.
❌ Weak: "Business Objective: Feature a curated assortment of Halloween candy... Goal: drive traffic to Maple.com... RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Which banner ad best positions Maple as the destination...?"
✅ Effective: "We are testing two Halloween promotional offers on digital display. For each, identify what feels compelling, what falls flat, and how shoppers process it. V1: 20% off Halloween candy. V2: Buy 2 get 1 free on select Halloween treats. To inform final creative selection."
Case 2: Audience Labels in the Objective
The target audience is already defined by your community selection. Describing the audience again in the objective primes the discussion and can bias findings.
❌ Weak: "Evaluate which Christmas gifting promotion on Instagram Stories is more compelling to budget-conscious empty nesters..."
✅ Effective: "Evaluate two Christmas gifting offers for Instagram feed. For each, identify what elements are compelling, what feels flat, and how shoppers process it. To inform final creative selection."
Case 3: No Channel Stated
A social media ad, an email, and an in-store sign all need evaluating differently. Without a channel, the AI agents cannot contextualize the creative correctly.
❌ Weak: "Evaluate this promotional creative for the Maple summer range. Identify what resonates, what creates hesitation..."
✅ Effective: "Evaluate this sponsored Instagram feed post for the Maple summer range. Identify what resonates, what creates hesitation, and how shoppers process it. To inform final creative selection."
Case 4: Discussion Questions Written into the Objective
The platform generates its own questions from the objective. Adding verbatim questions buries the actual research goal and constrains the output.
❌ Weak: "RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What stands out most about this content and why? How does this headline make you feel? Does it inspire you to shop?..."
✅ Effective: "Evaluate two homepage headline styles on the Maple app. For each, identify what resonates, what falls flat, and how users process it. To inform homepage personalisation strategy."
Case 5: Vague or Incomplete Reference
Without a name or channel, the AI cannot determine what is being evaluated.
❌ Weak: "Does this drive sign-ups to the program."
✅ Effective: "Evaluate this promotional email for the Maple loyalty programme. Identify what elements feel compelling, what is unclear or causes confusion, and what would drive sign-up. To inform final creative selection."
Case 6: Outcome Signalled Before Evaluation Begins
Framing a study as confirmation rather than discovery can cause findings to lean toward validating an assumption rather than reflecting genuine community responses.
❌ Weak: "We are confident the new packaging design will perform better with our core shoppers. This study will help us confirm that before we present to stakeholders."
✅ Effective: "Evaluate two packaging designs for the Maple breakfast cereal range. For each, identify what resonates, what creates hesitation, and how shoppers process it. To inform final packaging selection."
